Public education in America is in a state of disintegration and like never before, our children need us to get involved and be part of their school community. Awfully bold and uncharacteristically issues oriented I know, thanks to movies like Won’t Back Down which premiers Friday, September 28th, the darker side of our broken system is being shared nationwide and I can’t encourage you enough to take that first step and go see this movie.

Thanks to One2One Network and The Moms Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein, I was very grateful to be invited to attend a screening of Won’t Back Down during BlogHer 2012. New York City begs for entertainment mixed with glamour and having never attended a red carpet or movie premier, I was beside myself excited to check it out. Couple this with the very real public school chaos we are living through in Wake County, NC, having our superintendent fired just this week by a politically divided and dysfunctional school board, I could not have asked for a more perfect invite that hit home and was worth every minute of my time.

The Red Carpet was sparkly with all kinds of stars. I was included in a group shot with the editor of Ladies Home Journal, the Director, among others and found myself starstruck at the magic of it all. I was delighted to see Jenny Ingram ~ she is a master of her craft…

I was blessed to spend the evening with Kim Grenon who is a community leader and activist in her own right, leading an anti-bullying campaign in her home town, volunteering as a high school coach, and just all kinds of knock your socks of business smarts and awesome.

I was impressed to discover the Office Depot Empowerment Wall. In partnership with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, Office Depot is working to support anti-bullying and self confidence programs by taking a stand for Kindness not only for Back-to-School 2012 but all year long. I could not love the logo “We Deliver Kindness” more  and think the mission of encouraging students to be both brave and kind is empowering beyond words.  Each of us who attended the Red Carpet were asked to take a post-it note and write the one thing we would say to a child suffering cruelty.

Once we made our way through the lobby, it was time to get down to business.  The movie as described by the public relations engines:

In this powerful story – inspired by true events – of  parenthood, friendship, hope and courage, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis portray determined mothers who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner city school.  Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy and a system mired in traditional thinking, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.

All I can say is it was nothing short of tears, cheering laughing, more tears, and incredible inspiration.  I was captivated by the story, the pain, the possibility, and how very real it all is.  This story of failing education and parents left with hard choices (if any choice) is playing out every day across our country.  These women are any Mom next door no matter rich or poor, educated or not.  Unified by our common role as Mom, They are every one of us who want’s something better not only for our children but for our ourselves, not only for our school but for the community our schools play such an important role in binding us together.  They are juggling, struggling, and doing everything they can in the face of logical fear to follow their instincts, no matter how many times they are told no or rejected by those they know.

As if the movie was not enough to leave me ready to rally for our schools like never before, after the screening we were privileged to hear directly from the phenomenal cast and director.  SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!   Yes…we were that close, had the chance to ask questions, and my starstruck Red Carpet self suddenly found my way to “This is what doing work you love is all about!”  Take a look and see what Maggie Gyllenhall, Viola Davis, Rosie Perez, and Director David Barnz had to say about their passion for their craft, the meaning of this story to their lives, and how working in movies is work so very worth doing….

Maggie Gyllenhaal on the activist that lies within us all…

Viola Davis on changing the world one child at a time….

Rosie Perez on the education system in our country and the change that has to come…

Director David Barnz on getting involved in your own community…

Won’t Back Down will be in theaters nationwide tomorrow, Friday September 28th. I can’t encourage you enough to get out to see it and ask yourself this simple question…

How can I get involved to support my child’s teachers and school?

If its broken, don’t wash your hands of the problem and walk away. Roll your sleeves up and fix it.  Because this image of a teacher who loves her craft AND her kids isn’t fiction, its reality.  Believe in them and help them be the best they can be so your child will know a future without limitation and a life full of inspiration.
