Quick Tips

Things to Do in the Fall

  • Back to School and Up-To-Date
Take time at the beginning of the school year to update all of your medical records and emergency information in your planner.  While completing all the forms that come home in the first week, cross check your records.  Also, ask permission from the individuals you choose to list as emergency contacts prior to submitting the form back to the school.  Not only is it courteous, but it also allows your contact to get prepared too.  When possible, choose only one person to cite at the contact for your entire family.  And if you've gotten out of the habit over the summer, remember to carry your cell phone with you whenever you aren't at home or at work in the event that an emergency occurs at school that requires your attendance. • Get Involved in Your Child's School
Are you too busy for bake sales? Find a creative way to become a parent volunteer. Call your PTO president and ask how you can help. Describe the skills you can bring to the group. Are you a marketing executive? They need your help promoting the spring book fair, the winter auction and other events. Are you a nonprofit professional? They need your help to take their fundraising to the next level, and keep more of what they make. Are you a CPA or in finance? You can help them better organize the books and make their capital grow. Do you work in the arts? You can help find talented artists, authors, and experts to visit the classrooms to bring to life curriculum units. Do you work in politics? Help the school find ways to reach out and connect to its community. All of these contributions require more expertise than actual hours, and can be accomplished with phone calls and memos rather than days off from work. Click here for more ways to get involved
  • Prepare for the Holidays
Holidays normally spell chaos, but it doesn't have to. To reign control of your family's schedule and time, decide what events and traditions are important to you. Then put those events on your calendar, when you get invitations to parties, learn to say no. Click here for more holiday time management
