For as much as I plan ahead, when it comes to New Year’s Eve I’m all about the last minute party at home. Surprising I know, but we have the biggest time without any of the fuss. Everyone who gathers wants to be there. No one has expectations. And you ring in the New Year with the people who make love you most. When our kids were babies we spent New Year’s Eve at home, celebrating early with other families who had young children too. I suppose that’s when I realized how much fun it could be to stay in and celebrate. And I also learned how great last minute plans can be.
If you find yourself wanting to have a fabulous (last minute) New Year’s Eve party at home, there’s no time like the present to make that happen. Here are my tips!
Invite your people.
New Year’s Eve is a night full of expectations. Take all of that off the table in one fell swoop by making sure you spend it with your people. I mean the ones who love you at your worst as much as your best, who make you laugh so much your belly hurts, and who get you through and through. Chances are it’s a family invitation and your friends kids will hang just as well as their parents. If like me, you have teens, open your home for their friends to stay the night. I’d much rather have them off the roads safe with me than out looking for something to do and its easy to make the house work for everyone to have fun.
Order take out.
New Year’s Eve day means college football so if I’m lucky, our house will be full of the kids and their friends watching favorite bowl games and having fun. That means party food is a hot mess of appetizers followed by Chinese takeout with fortune cookies. Easy to prepare and even easier to call in, I never feel like I’m ending the year cleaning and that, my friends, is a very good thing indeed.
Splurge on New Year’s Eve party supplies.
Think glasses, hats, noisemakers, and sparklers. Each so fun to have on hand, they put everyone in the New Year’s spirit and look great with sweatpants too!
And by games I mean for both kids and grown ups alike. There are so many that can be played together including Scrabble, Charades, Head Bands, and Twister. but don’t overlook a great round of Cards Against Humanity. Just make sure little ears can’t hear.
Make dream boards.
At some point in my career, I discovered the magic that is making a dream board. The theory is based on the Law of Attraction ~ that when you make a dream board full of phrases or images that reflect what you want in your life, you will attract it. All it takes is poster board, magazines full of images and phrases, some scissors, and glue. You can set up a Dream Board station in your home and throughout the night people can take time to create one. Party favor done!
