Apex, NC (September 2007) - Today, GO MOM!® INC shares its best ideas to help Moms handle their new family fall schedules. "Now that the excitement of returning to school has worn off, many Moms are scrambling to handle the afternoon and evening hours packed full of activities, sports, and homework," states Molly Gold, Founder of GO MOM!® INC. "To stay on top of busy afternoons that may keep Moms away from home, its back to the basics and a healthy dose of organization." Try these GO MOM!® solutions to keep yourself sane while you and your children enjoy each day:
Set Limits and Schedule - First, limit each child to one activity per season until you can see how they handle the commitment and if adding more interests is feasible in both your budget and your schedule. Make sure to include your child in making this decision because it's her interests you are hoping to develop. Next, set up child specific files to store all the important information related to the activity and then sit down with your GO MOM!® Planner and map out your days. Choose a specific color for each family member so you can visually recognize who the activity is for and let everyone know what theirs is. After mapping your days, you'll be able to see clearly where you will need to be more creative to get everyone in place.
Think Carpool - Sooner or later, most Moms find they are outnumbered by the logistical demands of the afternoon regardless of how carefully they have scheduled their days. Don't be afraid to either join or start a carpool to keep your family on track. Look for a handful of like-minded Moms who share your commitment to arriving on time, appropriate behavior on the part of the kids, and flexibility in the face of unexpected events, like sick siblings who can't be left at home, thus requiring you to switch days with another Mom. Take some time to get to know each other because entrusting your child to the safe habits of another driver is an important decision. Because of the independence needed on behalf of the child, consider carpools for your oldest children first, accounting for their maturity and ability to handle the responsibility to be organized.
Drive a GO MOM!® Taxi- In my experience, there isn't anything worse than a messy car full of cranky, hungry kids and a Mom working hard to keep peace and follow a map. Start every week with a clean car, stocked with tissues, hand sanitizer and surface wipes, bags for trash and unexpected wet items or illness, healthy non-perishable snacks, bottled water, and a small tote with activities for siblings who have to hang out. For older siblings, have a portable homework station stocked with the necessities so they can make the most of their time on the road and enjoy their free time at home. And don't forget the first aid kit because you never know when you'll need it most.
Secret Weapons We Love - My favorite splurge is a GPS to keep you on course when traveling to new fields or performance locations. If you can't keep the peace without it, enlist the help of a DVD player. However, don't overlook the amount of TV time used on the road. One hour of electronic stimulation is often recommended as the standard, and this includes gaming and computer use as well as TV. You'll be surprised at how interesting the world outside the car window becomes when on board gaming or TV takes away from what's at home. And last but certainly not least, a good Crock-Pot is a busy Mom's best friend. Choose easy meals that allow you to combine all the ingredients early in the day, filling your home with the wonderful smells of a home cooked meal. You can either take along or know its waiting for you when you return.
