Apex, NC (June 2008) - Today, GO MOM!® INC shares new ideas to help families share a summer full of fun that is both easy on their pocketbooks and the Earth. "Living green is a key priority for today's busy Mom" states Molly Gold, Founder of GO MOM!® INC. "With rising fuel costs and a strained economy, families are saving their pennies and staying close to home. This is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover all the hidden treasures your local community offers while making choices that are both eco-friendly and affordable, the ultimate win-win. And let's face it, the lazy days of summer can quickly lose their allure if your children cry boredom before you can say Happy Fourth of July!" Choose just a few of our suggestions below and you'll find your planner has a purpose and your days fly by all too fast:
Get Ready to Recycle: The first step to a successful home recycling program is contacting your waste management service or local municipality to get guidelines about what items you can place curbside, what items require drop off, and what items are simply not accepted. Next, talk with your kids about introducing or improving your family recycling program. Enlist their help in designating a location for receptacles, assembling those receptacles, and making instructional signs with pictures to keep the sorting process simple for both kids and adults. And finally, challenge your neighbors to a summer contest to see which house can recycle the most trash by using the honor system to weigh your weekly load. Come Labor Day, celebrate reducing your neighborhood footprint with an ice cream party and all the toppings.
Family Date Nights: Summer Saturdays beg for entertainment so what better way to enjoy the fireflies and crickets than a concert on the local town green? Concerts in the park are making a comeback and not only is the entertainment enjoyable and home grown, the event is most often free! Make Saturdays your day to support the local economy by first visiting the Farmer's Market for fresh produce and other special items not found anywhere but at home. Then pack your picnic basket with a fabulous spread, serving ware you can re-use and you are off to a night of music and fun under the stars. This is a wonderfully social summer tradition you can be sure the entire family will grow to enjoy!
Open to the Public: To learn more about special events in your area this summer, visit the local Convention and Visitor's Bureau website for a complete listing sure to delight. In particular, check out the myriad of free programs found at local museums. You'll be amazed at all they have to offer, including travelling exhibits and free instructional classes that are truly unique. Take it further by talking with your kids about what they might find of interest, and then visit your local library to select books ahead of time to set the stage for an interactive learning event. And finally, make it green by using public transportation to get there. This in itself can be a huge hit with kids who rarely travel beyond the mini-van or school bus every day.
Watch Your Water: While there might not seem to be much more to say on the topic, summer is the season where we are most likely to waste it without any concept of how much we have used but how much more we can save. Gather up your kids and take a tour of all the places inside your home where water is in use. For every area, choose just one strategy anyone can easily employ to conserve and post a friendly reminder for all to see. Keep it simple like turning off the water when brushing teeth, setting a timer to limit showers, and filling bathtubs halfway instead of entirely full. All of these steps indoor will contribute to making more water available for outside use. And speaking of outdoors, double up fun and function by limiting sprinkler use to two days a week and designating those days for water play. While you water your lawn, let your kids run wild with friends and toys that won't interrupt your purpose, which is to nourish the garden and grass. To lend a visual aid to how much rainfall you receive each storm, place a rain gauge in your garden and check it after each storm. You'll be amazed at how eye opening this is when the kids realize how little rain an inch offers compared to how much water they use in the pool.
