To know me is to know I love summer and being outdoors ~ the more of both the better! So to take the edge off of how much I wish summer would never end, I welcome fall by planning my family’s next outdoor adventure. Because Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, hanging on to the last three weeks of my favorite season can be a challenge. And there is no question our family’s busy back to school schedule makes weekends all the more precious for carving out time for outdoor activities that are purely for fun instead of sports or chore related as is so often the case.
Which is why when it comes to your family’s next outdoor adventure, it all comes down to a plan.
Raising a family who loves outdoor adventure was something I never had to think about. Both my husband and I were raised to play outside from the minute we finished breakfast until we heard our mothers calling us home for dinner. And in the summer, that only meant we were taking a break before heading out again to spend the evening playing games like Capture the Flag with the neighborhood kids until well after dark. My childhood memories are full of outdoor adventure and I can’t imagine it any other way.
Ten years ago we moved to North Carolina and were blessed to find a community with common areas, woods, and a creek where the kids could create their own outdoor adventures beyond our spacious yard. We knew instantly that this would be the perfect backdrop for their creativity and sense of adventure as they explored their way through their childhood with the freedom to play that can be so elusive today.
At the same time we decided that we wanted our children to experience an outdoor adventure every summer. Because of our close proximity to the gorgeous North Carolina coast, we chose an annual beach trip to be the outdoor adventure that anchors our summers with the hope of taking them to a different North Carolina Beach each year enabling them to experience them all. We are that family who spends every waking minute on the beach and in the water, shelling, walking, surfing, fishing, playing games ~ that’s us and we love every minute!
We also chose the beach knowing that if sports schedules took over, we’d always have time that time to totally disconnect and relax away from the crazy tournament schedules and weekends out of town. You see all three of our children play sports competitively and as it turned out, each specialized in sports played outdoors in the spring and summer. But given the nature of how they spent their early years, it’s really no small surprise that they’d fall in love with being outside and physically active and for that I am beyond grateful for how that will impact their entire lives.
Now that our children span middle to college aged, the meaning of outdoor adventure has begun to change. While we all can’t wait to visit a new North Carolina beach each year, the kids now talk about adding in additional outdoor adventure into other seasons of the year too. Things like hiking through the Grand Canyon, snow skiing in the mountains of Colorado, surfing on the California coast, and even biking through New England in the fall. I told you they are an athletic bunch! As our oldest moves through college and our middle son will begin next year too, our time as a family is more limited than ever and so we find ourselves creating new traditions on holiday breaks that full of outdoor adventure. And I’ll be honest, I’m loving this stage of parenting more than I could have ever imagined!
Incorporating our outdoor adventure lifestyle into our daily routine is the best way I know how to keep that spirit alive. From daily walks to home decor that includes pictures and keepsakes like shell jars and more, these are all reminders of the most simple pleasures of being outdoors. And I don’t know about you, but I also find myself drawn to anything that smells like the memory of a place and time. I have scented candles that smell like the ocean breeze for summer and cinnamon scented candles to remind me of the holiday season too.
