Magic of Healthy Living Media Interviews

This clip is from the 2011 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.   On Saturday evening, attendees were invited to interview representatives from the Magic of Healthy LIving including Disney Channel Celebrities, Disney Chefs and executive spokespeople are dedicated to the launch of this program.

Keeping kids active in the winter can be a challenge for even the most athletic parents I know.  From cold temperatures to snow storms, seasonal illness and the temptation to play video games, the battle to keep kids moving is constant and can be easy to lose.  Last year I had the honor of attending the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and while there, we were introduced to the now familiar Disney Magic of Healthy Living Campaign.  Designed to partner with parents to make healthier lifestyles an easy thing to do, the press conference covered everything from eating right to staying active.  The concept is that in doing so, parents can help their families life life to their fullest potential and that’s the true Magic of Healthy Living.

Disney introduced the multimedia initiative because research shows that parents want their families to live healthier lives but feel they need help to achieve that goal. (Healthy Kids Retail Research)   What caught my eye is how the campaign is designed to reinforce the work of parents by helping inspire kids to live healthy lifestyles. The initiative also provides parents with resources and tools for healthy living that can be woven into the fabric of everyday life in fun, easy and sustainable ways. What I LOVE about this is Disney took the perspective of the parent first, asking themselves how they can help us do this better, and then took all they knew about what kids love to create a multi-media platform that truly connects the dots for real success.

I had the chance to ask a few questions and here is what the Celebrity Team had to say about how kids stay fit with family fun:

1.  Think of ways to be active that you can do alone or as a family.  Things that we’ve discovered work really are just simple fun, family activities like riding a bike, walking a dog, even jumping up and down and creating an obstacle course in the back yard.

2.  Think everything from 10 minute, 15 minute, 30 minute ideas. The key is that small moves really do add up and they can lead to big rewards.  Itt doesn’t have to be 60 minutes at one sitting but small moves can add up.

2.  With just being active I’ve found that just stepping outside being under the sun will put you in the position to be more prone to be more active. Even if its just walking around, being outside is key.

You know by now that I’m an old school Mom, believing that you need to play to learn and grow.  My husband and I are blessed to be raising three very creative, athletic kids who have yet to meet a sport or game they don’t like.  But even if they couldn’t jump rope without falling, we’d still be out there taking walks, playing at the park, riding bikes, and enjoying all the outdoors has to offer. Being outside is one of the best parts of working from home for me ~ I can’t imagine a day that doesn’t include fresh air and I hope sunshine.  But consider this ~ nearly 70 percent of lowest income families in the U.S. say they don’t have access to a community playground yet, nearly all parents say playing outside is critical to keeping their kids physically fit (Harris Interactive, 2009). Taking the project one step further, Disney Magic of Healthy Living is giving kids a place to play, as well as an opportunity to eat food that they can help grow themselves.  As part of this campaign, last year Disney made a $1 million contribution to help to build play spaces and gardens in 10 underserved communities nationwide.

After the interview opportunity, we joined our families for the Magic of Healthy Living Finale and Celebration Dinner.  There awards were presented from the days’ activities with some very special entertainment.  Purely by chance, I had the opportunity to spend a few minutes interviewing NFL Hall of Fame and Redskins Football legend Darrell Green about his efforts to support fitness of all ages. It truly was a magical night!
