How to Organize An Office

Today we are talking about how to organize an office. I’ve recently reorganized my office to accommodate all of the needs that everyone seems to have. My office happens to be located right off our garage door entryway so it naturally begs for people to come into it. As well, it has a few multi-purpose functions so let me show you the solutions that really made a difference in taking care of all of those needs while making it still feel like this room is all about me…because after all…it really is my office.

1. Artwork Solution: Our youngest child still generates plenty of artwork at school. We want her to be able to proudly see her work on display and also be able to reach it so she can interact with how its shared. We have 2 boards, one at her height and one a bit higher for longer term display. We are able to rotate artwork as it comes in and out anytime she brings home something new and special.

2. Kids Homework Station: We have a designated workstation for our teenage boys. They have online access while they are in my office and we are able to work side by side quite easily. Its taken a bit of trial and error to figure out how far apart we need to be, where to set up the desk to minimize their distraction, and finally placing the desk along the wall with their back to the window and back to the door makes their shared time in my office a lot more efficient.

3. Mobile Charging Station: My husband dutifully charge his IPad in the kitchen, the previous location for our charging station. This was great except it was supposed to only be for small phones and was far too close to the cooktop. The simple step of moving the charging station into my office has completely made my day! Now we can accommodate my new Samsung Note, his IPhone, and his IPad perfectly right here with the proper surface out of the way to charge away!

4. Less of my Desk: One of the major things I did to make my desk more comfortable was to pull it off the wall it was on, take off the huge hutch that was towering over me collecting more clutter than serving my work, and giving me a peaceful space right here. My surface is clear, when I’m working on my computer the best part about my office is having removed the window treatments entirely and simply dressing it with a simple set of sheers, I love this big beautiful window and how get to soak in the beauty of my backyard and and plenty of blooming flowers.

When I’m here now, the reality is this is creative work, I can think creatively, do what I need to do, turn my back to others in the room for greater focus when I need to, and I can still keep an eye on things out in the common space of our home thanks to my glass french door. So these are some of the solutions that I have put into place when I re-organized my office to accommodate the reality that it is in fact a shared space. But now, most of it is a very de-cluttered, creative, and beautiful space for me to work in…because after all, that was my long term goal. Tell me…

What do you do to make your work space functional for everyone who uses it while making it as peaceful and creative for you to do your work?
