If you have a youth softball player now is the time to get her glove ready to roll for the spring season. And if you are short on time before game day, you might be wondering how to break in a softball glove swiftly. Well thanks to Mizuno, I recently had the chance to learn all about the Mizuno Glove Steaming Service available at Dick’s Sporting Goods and boy am I a fan!
This is a sponsored post.
Before we go any further, let’s discuss the basics. When you buy a softball glove, you need to break it in. This has historically been done by wetting the leather, setting a ball inside the glove, tying the glove up in string, and putting the glove under the mattress. This is a tried and true, old school way of getting the glove ready to go along with spending time working it in by catching the ball into the glove.
Make no mistake, Mizuno loves the tradition and heritage of baseball. But Mizuno also knows that softball players want the best performance from their gloves. The Glove Steamer process includes custom fitting the glove to the player’s preference so that the glove is ready to go in a matter of minutes, not weeks. This is huge if you are a hustling to keep up with the busy pace of your family’s schedule and for me, worth it from very angle.
So now that we’ve addressed that, let’s take look at Glove Steaming with Mizuno!
Thanks to an early release Friday at school, we were able to hit our local Dick’s Sporting Goods early afternoon when things were quiet. After meeting the staff, we headed over to the baseball section of the store where the Mizuno Glove Steamer is located just near the front door.
Super easy to spot, the associate told us on a busy day they’ll end up steaming gloves one after another because people see the machine and decide to jump in and make the most of the service. Like me, many parents have no idea that glove steaming exists so when they see this, find out it takes 15 minutes to do what takes weeks at home, they are all in!
How does Glove Steaming work?
The Mizuno glove is wiped down with Mizen’s magical soft solution, a pre-steam treatment.
The treated glove is placed in the glove steamer for one minute cycles while the temperature reaches about 130 degrees. Our associate said three is the magic number for visits inside the steamer to make sure the glove is soft enough without drying out the leather.
Next, the Mizuno glove is broken in with a mallet.
This is about as hands on as I can imagine because the associate is literally pounding the tar out of the glove from a variety of angles, folding over the thumb, working the edges, and smacking the tar out of the interior pocket to make it began to loosen up.
Once the glove has been pounded and steamed three times each, often that’s the perfect shape and softness. If not, players can choose to go as many additional rounds as they need for the fit to be perfect or they can mix it up and take the glove home to finish the working in process by hand, playing catch. And who doesn’t love playing catch with a brand new custom fit glove!
Once the glove has been shaped specifically to the fit and preference of the player, the glove is treated with Mizuno Strong Oil, a conditioning treatment to soften and protect the leather. We got some great tips from our associate about how to care for the glove for the best experience possible.
And there you have it! I can’t say enough about our associate at Dick’s Sporting Goods for taking so much time to explain every step of the process and make sure my daughter understood not only why this is important but how to care for her glove too. Investing in quality athletic gear is key and learning good habits early on how to make that gear last is a lesson for life that helps both on and off the field which really, isn’t that what sports is all about?
Thanks so much to Mizuno for inviting to be part of the Mizuno Glove Steaming event in my hometown this past week ~ it was an awesome experience that I’d encourage parents of youth softball and baseball players alike to take advantage of. You can get your glove steamed at the store anytime but it you head out this week, the service is FREE with the purchase of your glove! So tell me…
How do you break in a softball glove?
I hope you’ve found this post helpful as you get ready for opening day! I know in my family we are all chomping at the bit for warmer days at the field and summer nights to return with the crack of the bat and the cheer of the crowd. Look for more sports and team mom content in the coming weeks including…drum roll…the release of our much anticipated TEAM MOM BUNDLE!!! It’s on the way and I promise you’ll love it!
Thanks so much for stopping by ~ we’ll see you next time!
Disclosure: Special thanks to Mizuno for engaging me for this post. I was provided product to use in the process so we could see first hand what Glove Steaming is all about. All opinions are entirely my own.
