Dear Martha Stewart, Bloggers are Experts Too…

Martha Stewart

Earlier this week Martha Stewart did an interview with Bloomberg TV and stated that bloggers aren’t experts. I could not help but to weigh in on this because the designation of “expert” status is an intriguing thing in the world of social media. I could not help but share my thoughts on Twitter last night and when I woke up with the topic nagging at me, I decided a conversation about what makes a blogging expert is video worthy.  I recognize this is completely outside what we normally post.  But it is precisely because we are part of the blogging community and my years of working hard to provide you with the best “expert” advice I can that I think it deserves some thought.  I hope you’ll watch…

So what do you think? Are the bloggers you follow experts to you? Because in the end, that’s all that really matters.

Thanks so much for stopping by ~

I think the majority of bloggers are experts at what they write about. Why would they blog about their topic if they didn’t have first hand knowledge? Especially, if it’s business or tech related because I’m sure they’d have to do their research in order to blog about it.

Marcelle I completely agree ~ and the reality is the only expert that matters is the reader or viewer ~ because as my friend Fiona so wisely stated, the reader is the expert who knows what they like. Thanks for commenting!

Gardeners and housewives used to be inexperients too, but she published her books and became what she is. So… I didn’t like that comment. And I love her.

Thais I’ve said from the start there is plenty to love about a Martha Stewart touch and while her level of detail is not mine, I adore the influences and my friends who are naturally that clever. Thanks for commenting!

    * BUT I still love her.

There are people like you Molly who are experts ho provide amazing content and are the consummate professional. But there are plenty of bloggers who aren’t, and who don’t want to be experts. I think in particular she’s speaking to food bloggers, but I think her broad categorization of bloggers and food bloggers as being unexperienced and inexpert are too broad to be true. Some are, some aren’t, and for Martha to paint an entire community with a single comment makes me think she doesn’t know as much about marketing as I thought she did. She is still someone I admire, but I certainly would never work with her as a blogger.

Kelly I agree and just find the entire exchange so unfortunate. A limited point of view about the future talent that will lead in your niche is never a good thing and I’d hope Martha Stewart would know that by now. Especially having so aggressively gone after the support of the food and crafting blogging communities. Thanks for your comment!
