There is nothing like a college tailgate to get you in the mood for Fall! If you are the mom of a college student, you’ll likely find yourself attending a tailgate or two, especially when its time for Family Weekend. With our oldest son in his freshman year, we are learning as we go when it comes to new events (as has been the case for his entire life). Attending a college tailgate as a parent of an enrolled student seems like it will be just a bit different than attending one at your alma mater. Even though our entire life savings may be spent at this institution, it’s not our school, it’s his. So to me that means we want to be right on target for an appropriate amount of school spirit while not stepping on his toes.
This college journey begins sooner than we think and is over before we know it, launching both students and families into an entirely new partnership. Not all tailgates are alike. If you host a tailgate for your kids and their friends, that would be all kinds of fun and probably quite casual. But if you are tailgating with other adults or attending an official Family Weekend event, you may want to raise the fashion bar just a bit. Two factors that can influence the formality of a tailgate, no matter what the occasion, are which athletic conference the college is in and its region as well. Often times tailgates up north, in the midwest, and in the west can be very casual and a reflection of the weather, either cold or hot. But when you are in the southeast and the south, all I can say is – no matter how young or old, students to Moms, my word – these women have it going on!!! They dress to the nines all the way down to their painted nails. Don’t you dare forget those toes! If this is you it’s time to make sure you are dressed in your game day best. Here are a few tips for college tailgating fashion for moms:
Wear School Colors
No matter how casual or trendy you are, make sure your outfit and accessories give a nod to your school colors. Scarves and handbags can go the distance to make your outfit shine.
From a signature monogram to a big watch with school colors on the face, your jewelry will finish any outfit with just the right touch. Include a monogram on your necklace, bracelet or bag and you can even add one to your sunglasses too! It’s also a great way to make sure they don’t get confused with anyone else’s. But don’t forget to wear your every day bling ~ that favorite pair of big hoops earrings and your signature bracelet along with a special one for game day. You can dress anything up to be just for you.

Be Kind to Your Feet
While true southern tailgates almost always demand a great pair of real cowboy boots, you may want to consider how far you’ll have to walk between the parking lot, tailgate and the game. Depending on your camp site this can be a haul so make sure your feet are in the best shoes for the circumstances. In my case I’ll just swap the boots for the sandals and I’ll be good to go!
Dress for the Weather
There is nothing worse than having a great outfit and being miserably hot or cold. Don’t hesitate to wear shorts and nice sandals with colorful accessories and a nice white shirt as your backdrop. In the same turn, you’ll look fabulous in colored jeans, a spirit wear top, and a jean jacket if you need it too.

Tote Bags Rule
While I’d love to say I only carry a small cross body bag, that’s totally not true. I love a nice sized tote that will enable me to not only carry my personal items, but toss in my DLSR camera if I choose and be able to hold my extra belongings like a light weight sweater or small umbrella just in case. The handles on my tote make it easy to get things in or out or lay them across the top for easy access. And seriously, the right handbag can totally make the outfit when its as big as a tote can be.
