Summer is here and its time to get ready for summer camp. No matter if your kids are attending a day camp or visiting an overnight camp, you need to send them prepared for each day, knowing that they have just what they need to have fun and enjoy all the new friends and experiences that are waiting for them. With three summer athletes, our opportunities for overnight camp have been limited due to tournament and meet schedules. However we’ve been blessed to experience both and here are my tips to help your child get ready for for summer camp.
Use the summer camp packing list.
Check with your camp registrar to make sure you get the official “What to Pack for Camp” list. You might be surprised to see what you find, including stationary to write letters home, complete gear for inclement weather, and limitations about electronics. While you might not find a need for a certain item, trust the list that is has your most obvious camp specific bases needed.
Ask Moms for summer camp gear tips.
If I’ve learned nothing as a Mom, I know that my fellow Moms are often the best resource I have when doing something new. If your child is camping with a friend who has gone before, ask that Mom for her “must pack” list of items not found on the official camp list. Experience counts and your child can only benefit from knowing what has worked for friends who have gone before them.
Include your child to personalize with style.
Nothing says “That’s mine!” like the label your child picked out with you to make sure they could find their summer camp gear. Plan ahead to order personalized labels your child will love and be happy to see on all that they bring. Not only does this give them ownership of the process, it also gives them confidence that they will not lose their gear while having so much fun. My top pick for summer camp has to be Mabel’s Labels Limited Edition Camp Combo. Not only are they cute, they’ve thought of every possible labeling need AND these labels are more durable than any around, taking the wear and tear of water, heat, cold, and more. Each label pack is extensive, offering you more than enough labels to get started. Send extras along with your child just in case they acquire new items during summer camp that need to be identified.
Label every piece of summer camp gear.
Every. Single. Thing. Summer camp is full of new experiences and keeping track of all that gear is just one of the many life skills your child will face. Make it easy for them by labeling absolutely every item you pack. While it might not make a bit of sense, even the smallest items can easily get mistaken for a fellow campers when they discover their smart Moms chose the exact same supplies. So label it all, often and generously.
I hope these tips help you as you are getting your kids ready for summer camp. We’ve got both sleep away and day camp in the mix so its an exciting time for not only our kids but a chance for us all to grow as our kids embrace new experiences. Tell me…
